What it involves
Oral and maxillofacial pathology covers abnormal growths and changes in the mouth, jaws, and surrounding structures. Most are benign, but an accurate diagnosis is essential, and that usually begins with a careful exam, imaging, and often a biopsy.
Treatment depends on the diagnosis and ranges from a simple in-office biopsy to removal of a cyst or tumor with reconstruction of the jaw when needed. Dr. Nolan's experience in jawbone reconstruction and nerve grafting and repair means he can plan for both removal and restoration of form and function.
Who it's for
- A sore, lump, or swelling that has not healed within two weeks
- Red or white patches inside the mouth
- A cyst or lesion found incidentally on a dental X-ray
- Numbness, unexplained pain, or loosening of teeth without an obvious cause
Recovery basics
- Recovery from a minor biopsy is usually a few days of mild tenderness.
- Larger procedures have recovery tailored to the extent of surgery and any reconstruction.
- Biopsy results are reviewed with you personally, along with clear next steps.
- Some conditions call for periodic follow-up imaging, which we will schedule with you.
Every recovery is individual. You'll receive written instructions specific to your procedure, and our team is always available to answer questions while you heal.
